& Auditions
Fire & Ice Auditions: Ensemble Choreography
The third and final round of auditions for the student show Fire & Ice will include a crash course on some of the choreography for each of the acts. Students will learn a short section of the piece for which they are auditioning, taught by the choreographer or director. They will then perform the learned choreography in small groups. Execution and performance quality of the sequence will play a significant role in casting, but other factors such as availability, attitude, and experience will be considered.

Fire & Ice Auditions: Solo Presentations
The second round of auditions for soloists in the student show Fire & Ice will include performing a short act live in front of the director and select choreographers. These acts will have specific guidelines to follow that will be emailed to invited performers ahead of time.
After the presentation of solos, there will be a fitness evaluation. The fitness evaluation will test the cardio, strength, and flexibility of each performer. Inability to execute all evaluated skills will NOT prevent a student from being cast. The tests are designed to see where each performer is at in their fitness and evaluate their potential.
Students are encouraged to prepare well in advance. Circus Scorpius offers a variety of fitness classes that can aid performers in preparation. A number of coaches are also certified personal trainers and/or flexibility coaches who are available for private lessons.

Works-In-Progress Showcase
Ever wonder what acts look like BEFORE they hit the stage? Our performers work rigorously, creating draft after draft before bringing it to life in front of an audience.
Tomorrow, we are welcoming people to come watch several acts that the students and professionals have been working on over the past month. These pieces are in the final stages of the creation process. The artists are looking to share their works-in-progress with a live audience.
Attendance is free, all ages are welcome. :)
Art in the Loop
I am SO excited for Circus Scorpius to presenting a new collection of work in August as part of the Art in the Loop performances! Come check out the professionals at City Market as part of the 816 Day Celebration—the annual day set aside to celebrate Kansas City’s greatness (learn more about it here: https://www.dnakcmo.org/816-day). It is truly an honor to be featured on such a special day and by such a giving art organization!
From Art in the Loop:
“The Art in the Loop Foundation is pleased to present an incredible summer revue of performances. For fans of music, dance, acrobatics, and poetry, we are certain that there will be something engaging for everyone.
For nine years and nine summers, Art in the Loop has been committed to the project of enriching the Downtown KC area. Each year, a question, idea, or context provides parameters to work within. This year, artists and performers responded to the theme “Sustainable” by questioning the various definitions of sustainability, investigating the intersections between art and sustainability, and imagining the ways we can work together to create a more sustainable Downtown.
There will be three different performance days, all free and open to the public, and each with its own variety of artists and styles. A closing reception will commemorate the summer festivities this fall.
816 Day Celebration
Tues., August 16, 5:30–8:00 p.m. at the City Market, 20 E 5th St, Kansas City, MO
The Black Creatures: A musical duo whose inspirations range from Robert Glasper to Da Brat. Their blending of genre creates soundscapes as engaging as they are harmonious, and the complex lyrics narrate stories of science fiction as often as they comment on everyday life.
Circus Scorpius: A dynamic display of breathtaking physical acrobatics, Kelsey Aicher is an aerial acrobat whose background in screenwriting is expressed in the rich narratives she infuses into her performances.
Kyle Jones: A jazz saxophonist who will be performing two compositions by musicians whose artistic ethe are concerned with righting social injustices through music.”

Cervix Circus
Join us in supporting reproductive rights in Kansas through this fundraising event for Planned Parenthood Kansas.
Cervix Circus is a collaborative event organized by the four women-owned circus troupes in the Kansas area—Circus Scorpius, Cloud Nine, The Last Carnival, Voler: Thieves of Flight—working together to protect our rights over our bodies.
While this is a free circus show, we will be happily accepting donations to Planned Parenthood at the show.
Expect to see some amazingly strong people flying in the air, bending into contorted shapes, and dancing with fire for your entertainment and a good cause. We are flying for our rights!
